CGH Earth – Kochi (Cochin)

CGH Earth

Isn’t that also a good description of travel at its best? When you can connect with the soul of a land, drink in its natural beauty, know its people and their ways, you become a participant rather than a passer-by. And authentic new experiences are born.

At CGH Earth, our goal is to create experiences that involve and immerse you. Experiences those are not just enjoyable, but also environmentally aware and culturally rich.

Tourism can so often be a window, a space where cocooned in the comforts of the modern world, people look, snap a picture or two, and move on.

At CGH Earth, we do our best to provide the door.

Kerala: An Introduction

Kerala – The land blessed by nature, the land of festivals, the land of coconut trees, and the land of complete literacy has got 44 rivers, many lakes, hills and mountains to add to its natural beauty. That’s why it’s called ‘God’s own country!’

Kerala is a popular tourist destination for its backwaters, yoga, Ayurvedic treatments and tropical greenery. Kerala is wedged between the Lakshadweep sea and the Western Ghats.

Situated on the lush and tropical Malabar Coast, Kerala is one of the most popular tourist destinations in India.

Its unique culture and traditions, coupled with its varied demographics, has made Kerala one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. Speaking of culture, the state has the highest literacy rate in India with 99 percent.

The Western Ghats

The mountains and hills of Kerala is a paradise for nature lovers, with cool high mountains, gorges, and deep-cut valleys. The Western Ghats have formed almost an unbroken wall guarding the eastern frontier of Kerala. The Ghats range from 3000 ft. to more than 8000 ft. above the sea level. The Anamudi peak represents the highest point in India south of the Himalayas which rises to a height of 8841ft and calls for many adventures. Trekking up the hills, boating through the silent lake, a walk through plantation and a sneak-peak into the Periyar Tiger Reserve, does sound very thrilling and it certainly is.

The Shores

Spread along a distance of 55km Arabian Sea coastline, the beaches in Kerala have a distinctive character as they change as on proceeds from north to south. In the northern parts of Kerala, in places such as Bekal, Thalassery and Kannur, they are dotted with forts built by the Portugese, Dutch and British and have an exquisite surrounding. From Kozhikode the typography changes to flat lands and rocky shores. A common feature to all the beaches is the dense groves of coconut trees and distant shores with clear blue waters, that defines the culture, life and traditions of Kerala.

The Backwaters

Kerala is known for its backwaters which are an interconnected system of brackish water, lakes, rivers and canals that nearly runs the length of the state. These water bodies are dotted with towns and villages which play host to backwater cruises in Kettuvalams (Kerala Houseboats) over the longest lake of India and the largest in Kerala, The Vembanad Lake which is over 200 km² in area. These houseboats are like small cottages with little windows, where the view changes every few minutes. Paddy fields, palm groves, fishermen on their canoes heading towards their day’s catch and birds flapping their wings dry are a few sights to experience.

Kerala is a place where culture, art, tradition, yoga, ayurveda and meditation are the basis of its existence. These are the gateways to seek one’s self. The geographical setting with its beaches, hills and backwaters only add to its effectiveness.

Recipes from the CGH Kitchens

You may have enjoyed some of these delicious dishes at one of our properties. Well, this is where you can try your hand at cooking them yourself. A word about  the spices and coconut – if you’re lucky enough to be near an Indian grocery, you can go for the fresh stuff, which is always better, but you should get some fine results even from canned or supermarket ingredients.

Now you can feast on traditional Kerala cuisine at your very own dinner table. And savour all the memories of your holiday as they come flooding back.
